With the access we have today via technology and the media, there’s little we don’t know about the President Obama, from where he shops to his comic book collection. But that wasn’t always the case. In a Reddit thread featuring interesting facts about historical figures, we found these 12 about U.S. Presidents to be the most intriguing. Three of them are about Calvin Coolidge, because, well, he was one strange dude.

1. People usually consider Abraham Lincoln as having a deep, baritone voice. However, this is false. He had a shrill voice, which nonetheless carried well into crowds and allowed him to still be an effective public speaker.

2. George Washington had, by most accounts, bright red hair but wore a white wig which was the fashion at the time.

3. While president, Ulysses S. Grant was arrested for driving his horse too fast and was fined $20.

4. Calvin Coolidge loved having his head rubbed while he ate breakfast in bed.

5. When Zachary Taylor died, the first lady allowed an Italian artist to sketch his corpse.

6. Calvin Coolidge liked to ride a mechanical horse that he kept in the White House.

7. When Reagan got a hearing aid, their sales increased by 40%.

8. Coolidge had a raccoon as a pet and could be seen frequently walking it about the White House lawn.

9. Taft was the last president to have facial hair.

10. Jefferson had a pet bird that would eat from his mouth.

11. Truman was the only president in the 20th century without a college degree.

12. Whenever President William McKinley‘s wife suffered an epileptic seizure in public at an event or dinner, he would calmly drape a handkerchief over her face and carry on with whatever he was doing.
